Healthcare Experts Urge Providers Not to Rush in Meeting Meaningful Use

Even though the government provides incentive payments to eligible providers who demonstrate meaningful use of electronic health records, healthcare experts are cautioning physicians and hospitals not to rush to attest for meaningful use, according to an American Medical News report.

Mitch Morris, MD, principal at Deloitte Consulting's Life Sciences and Health Care practice, said healthcare providers can actually benefit from waiting, rather than rushing, to meet meaningful use. Rushing through the purchase and implementation of EHRs may lead to unintended consequences. Moreover, the rules for stage 2 meaningful use have not yet been released.

Dr. Morris adds physicians and hospitals can wait to attest for meaningful use until the end of next year and still obtain the maximum payment for compliance. By that time, the healthcare industry will also know criteria for stage 2 meaningful use, according to the news report.
