Once mostly found on the West Coast, health IT startups are emerging in Chicago and Miami, growing these cities' reputations as health technology hubs.
The Windy City is currently home to several prominent health IT companies, including Allscripts, Merge Healthcare and PatientKeeper, as well as industry giants HIMSS and the American Health Information Management Association. Chicagoland investors like Blue Cross Blue Shield Ventures and Healthbox are luring startups to the area, and a new state-funded startup center promises to bring more health IT innovation to Chicago —located in the city's historic Merchandise Mart, MATTER has $4 million in state funding and aims to be a collaborative workspace to foster interactions between entrepreneurs, academics and investors.
Miami was recently highlighted by The Wall Street Journal as a technology hub, thanks to an influx of Latin American technology companies and the region's strong healthcare sector. The area is home to a growing number of health IT companies, from startups to established organizations like CareCloud. "South Florida is becoming a healthcare software hub, a mini-Silicon Valley," Shashi Kusuma, MD, a physician and the creator of a mobile practice management platform, told the Sun-Sentinel. "There are a whole bunch of software companies down here specializing in health care. It's a burgeoning industry."
