Total transaction volume in the health IT and pharmaceutical IT segments dropped 8 percent from the second quarter to the third quarter of this year, according to a recent report from BerkeryNoyes.
Here are five trends and highlights of M&A activity in the third quarter, according to the report.
1. There were 95 health IT and pharmaceutical IT transactions in the second quarter of this year and only 87 in the third quarter.
2. The transactions in the third quarter valued $7 billion, which more than doubled the $3.2 billion transaction value in the second quarter.
3. The highest-value health IT transaction of the third quarter occurred when Teaneck, N.J.-based Cognizant Technology Solutions, Inc. acquired Naperville, Ill.-based TriZetto Corp. for $2.7 billion.
4. Cerner's acquisition of Siemens Health Services for $1.3 billion was another notable third quarter health IT transaction.
5. Charlotte, N.C.-based Premier, Inc., which provides data, analytics, supply chain solutions and other services, has been the most active acquirer year-to-date. Premier has engaged in four transactions so far this year, the largest being its third-quarter acquisition of Salt Lake City-based TheraDoc, Inc., an electronic clinical surveillance software provider, for $117 million.
