Health IT investment plummets in Q4 to $451M

Venture capital investment in health IT fell to $451.3 million in quarter four, down almost 75 percent from 2021's quarterly pace, according to a March 2 health IT report from market researcher PitchBook.

PitchBook analyzed VC and PE investment trends in healthcare IT in quarter four of 2022 and found the following trends:

  • The decline in health IT investment is being attributed to hospital and health system finances as many have been reporting financial losses and are focusing on ensuring they have the operating cash to keep business lines open, rather than devoting resources to technology.

  • There were 134 privacy equity deals in health IT in 2022, a 30 percent decline from 2021.

  • VC and PE investors exited 48 companies in 2022, less than half compared to 2021's figure.

  • Corporate venture arms slowed down their investments in health IT companies in 2022.
