HANYS working to address outstanding issues as e-prescribing program nears

Healthcare Association of New York State (HANYS) members across the state have been working to prepare for the new March 27, 2016, implementation date of the state’s e-prescribing mandate. HANYS and its members fully support the move to electronically prescribe for both controlled and non-controlled substances.

The e-prescribing law allows for temporary waivers to the mandate, for discrete circumstances, including for reasons of “technical limitation.” For a limited number of HANYS’ members, a technical limitation may require a temporary waiver to ensure the right technology is in place to safely and successfully implement e-prescribing.

Recently, HANYS and a number of hospital and health system members met in Albany with key officials from the Governor’s office and the Department on Health to provide an update on the tremendous progress the hospital and health system field has made toward compliance. HANYS requested the rapid establishment of a streamlined waiver process for those members facing a clear technical limitation. The group also asked for clarification of key outstanding policy issues. During the meeting, HANYS’ members underscored their shared commitment to e-prescribing.

The New York State Bureau of Narcotic Enforcement (BNE) released a newsletter dedicated to electronic prescribing. The BNE Update includes resources on the state’s mandate that will require e-prescribing of all controlled and non-controlled substances effective March 27, 2016.
