Google selects GE exec to head policy matters

Alphabet's Google named Karan Bhatia head of policy, according to Bloomberg. Most recently, Mr. Bhatia served as president of government affairs and policy at General Electric.

Mr. Bhatia is also a former deputy U.S. trade representative in the George W. Bush administration. In that role, he oversaw negotiations with China regarding export subsidies and intellectual property rights. He began working at GE in 2008.

In his new role, Mr. Bhatia will be responsible for developing and executing the company's public policy strategy, encompassing numerous issues, such as artificial intelligence. He will also lead strategy related to antitrust investigations and privacy laws.

Mr. Bhatia earned his law degree from Columbia Law School in New York City. He succeeds Caroline Atkinson, who left the role in September 2017, according to the report.
