Google plans $1B New York City expansion

Google is planning to spend more than $1 billion to expand its presence in New York City, nearly doubling the number of people it employs there, according to The Verge.

Although the exact details of Google's plans are still under wraps, the internet giant plans to build two office complexes set to be completed in 2020 and 2022.

The move follows in the footsteps of Amazon, which bestowed one of its second headquarters on the Long Island City neighborhood in New York's borough of Queens. Apple also recently announced a new Austin, Texas, campus Dec. 13.

Unlike Amazon, which embarked on a hotly contested, competition-style search for the location of its second headquarters, Google is not pursuing incentives from New York.
