Google veteran and technology expert David Weekly has developed a free app, which will launch May 3, that allows patients to record visits with their physicians, according to CNBC.
Patients and family members can use Medcorder to re-listen to visits and physician notes and share the information with family later. Studies have shown that patients do not always understand or absorb discharge instructions and other notes when leaving the emergency room. Patients have also been known to miss certain advice after receiving bad news, CNBC suggests.
Medcorder is designed to fix these problems. Physicians will need to give consent for patients to record the visit. While physicians have not always been on board to share notes during consults, Mr. Weekly believes physicians will be more accepting as they realize not all patients absorb the conversations in the moment.
Mr. Weekly set out to create the app after multiple members of his family were diagnosed with cancer, CNBC reports. Throughout his experience, he saw problems with communication in healthcare.
Experts in the technology sector continue to move into healthcare. Investors have put $30 billion into startups that are at the crossroads of healthcare and technology. While many of these startups focus on assisting hospitals and health systems, more tools like Medcorder could hit the market soon.
Mr. Weekly formerly served as the head of product for Google's data center software.
