Google Cloud digs deeper into generative AI for healthcare

Google Cloud launched new generative artificial intelligence tools for healthcare and life sciences organizations focused on improved patient outcomes.

The tech giant introduced Vertex AI Search for Healthcare March 12 at the HIMSS 2024 annual meeting to support developers build technology for clinicians and healthcare workers. Healthcare organizations can use the tool to build data analytics and AI solutions supporting more precise patient care.

"Not all generative AI is created equal, and in healthcare, the stakes are particularly high," said Aashima Gupta, global director for healthcare strategy and solutions, Google Cloud. "Healthcare organizations require enterprise-grade gen AI solutions, grounded in real data. Vertex AI Search for Healthcare is already making a difference for healthcare organizations by helping ensure clinicians have the right information and insights at the right time to inform decisions and improve the overall quality of patient care."

Google Cloud also launched a generative AI-driven platform focused on interoperability. The Healthcare Data Engine, a consumption-priced managed service, provides access to its data platform on a pay-as-you-go basis for more healthcare organizations to build and manage a near real-time healthcare data platform. Located in the cloud, HDE exists in a low-code graphical integrated development environment so customers can build high quality longitudinal patient records in fast-healthcare interoperability resources format.

HDE can be integrated with Vertex AI Search for Healthcare so clinicians can see information across multiple systems and formats with one inquiry. HCA Healthcare, a 182-hospital health system based in Nashville, Tenn., is a longtime partner with Google and one of the early adopters of the platform.

"At HCA Healthcare, we're focused on integrating technology into solutions that will empower our clinicians to perform at the top of their license and deliver exceptional patient care," said Michael J. Schlosser, MD, senior vice president of care transformation and innovation at HCA Healthcare. "Google Cloud understands our commitment. Through our partnership and by deploying its Healthcare Data Engine, HCA Healthcare has the ability to harmonize data from disparate sources into a comprehensive longitudinal patient record, which is fundamental to our advanced analytics and responsible AI initiatives."

Beyond new product launches, Google Cloud is also enhancing the MedLM, a family of foundation models designed for healthcare applications. MedLM added capabilities to help classify chest X-rays for operational, screening and diagnostics cases, and Condition Summary, a task-specific application programming interface that provides a chronological list of patient conditions and summaries with citations.
