Google Cloud acquires mainframe migration company Cornerstone

Google Cloud on Feb. 18 announced it acquired Cornerstone Technology, an IT company that will help migrate customers' mainframe workloads to the tech giant's cloud platform.

As customers modernize their infrastructure and applications on the Google Cloud platform, they will be able to access Cornerstone's solutions for migration roadmap development, language and database conversion and automated data migration.

"For decades, companies have relied on a mainframe architecture to run their mission-critical workloads, but it often holds developers back from taking advantage of new technologies that enable them to innovate more quickly," the company said in a blog post. "Cloud computing presents the opportunity to modernize your applications and your infrastructure, resulting in better capabilities and allocation of resources so your organization can focus on your core business."

The new acquisition follows reports last week that Google is restructuring its computing business. As the segment undergoes an internal reorganization, a "small number" of employees have been eliminated, according to The Wall Street Journal.

Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian recently outlined the company's new strategy to compete with tech giants Amazon and Microsoft by specifically targeting the C-suite in the fields of healthcare, retail, financial services, media and entertainment, and manufacturing, according to CNBC.

Financial details of the Cornerstone Technology acquisition were not disclosed. Earlier this month, Google's parent company Alphabet posted Google Cloud earnings for the first time; the division generated $8.9 billion in total revenues for 2019, according to the Feb. 3 report.
