Microsoft nominated Emma Walmsley, CEO of GlaxoSmithKline, to join its board of directors, according to a Sept. 19 Securities and Exchange Commission filing.
Ms. Walmsley's nomination will be voted on at Microsoft's annual shareholders meeting in December. If elected, she will become the fifth woman on the tech giant's 13-member board, up from just two in 2015, per CNBC.
The board's other female members are Teri List-Stoll, executive vice president and CFO of Gap; Sandra Peterson, operating partner at Clayton, Dubilier & Rice; Penny Pritzker, founder and chair of PSP Partners and former U.S. secretary of commerce; and Padmasree Warrior, founder, president and CEO of Fable Group.
"Emma is an accomplished business leader who led major advances in research and development at GSK and will bring her significant insights and global experience to Microsoft," John W. Thompson, Microsoft's independent board chair, said in the filing. "We believe she will be a valuable addition to the board."
