A federal judge has sentenced a former surgical instrument technician to a year of probation for disclosing information of 19 hospital patients, according to Pittsburgh Post-Gazette report.
Paul C. Pepala worked as a surgical instrument technician at UPMC Shadyside in Pittsburgh in 2008. He allegedly accessed patients' names, birth dates and Social Security numbers and gave them to others who used the information to file false tax returns and claim $84,190 in refunds, according to the report.
