A former employee at Toledo, Ohio-based ProMedica has been indicted on federal charges for intentionally obtaining protected health information and accessing a protected computer with authorization, according to the Toledo Blade.
Ms. Knapp allegedly accessed 594 patient records at Bay Park Hospital in Oregon, Ohio, between May 10, 2013 and March 25, 2014 containing patient names, birth dates, Social Security numbers, medical histories, prescriptions and medications, according to the report.
ProMedica discovered the breach in April 2014 and did not originally file charges since the Oregon police department was unable to substantiate any violations of state or local laws, according to the report. However, a probe into the case by the FBI determined Ms. Knapp had violated HIPAA, leading to the indictment.
