Former Connecticut exchange CEO Kevin Counihan to oversee HealthCare.gov

CMS has selected Kevin Counihan to serve as Marketplace CEO, responsible for overseeing the federal online insurance exchange.

Mr. Counihan is no stranger to the online exchanges, most recently serving as Connecticut's health insurance exchange CEO. The state's marketplace implementation was successful and exceeded enrollment expectations, becoming the first state to pass the enrollee goal for the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.

In addition to leading the federal marketplace, Mr. Counihan will also manage relationships with state marketplaces and run the Center for Consumer Information and Insurance Oversight.

HHS Secretary Sylvia Burwell said the recent hire is intended to ensure a successful open enrollment in 2015. "I'm particularly pleased to welcome Kevin Counihan to the new Marketplace CEO role," Ms. Burwell said in a news release. "He brings additional operational and technological expertise to the position and will be a clear, single point of contact for streamlined decision-making."
