Fletcher Allen Health Care, Vermont IT Leaders Partner to Improve Statewide HIE

Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington, Vt., and Vermont Information Technology Leaders recently completed a joint pilot program that resulted in providers connected to the statewide health information exchange having access to radiology and transcribed reports from Fletcher Allen.

The joint pilot program was aimed at improving care coordination throughout the state by extending provider portals to clinics, physician practices and other hospitals, making patient information more readily available to all providers who treat the patient. Now, reports and clinical information from Fletcher Allen are accessible on a limited basis to providers who treat Fletcher Allen patients, and they can also be delivered directly into a provider's electronic health record system.

The new system is designed to get outside providers necessary information as quickly as possible. "Hospitals generate volumes of clinical data that can be critically relevant for treating patients in order to enhance care, so it is invaluable for providers to have immediate access to patient health information, especially at the point of care," said John K. Evans, CEO of VITL, in a news release. "What we learned through the pilot is that the development time of these interfaces can be dramatically improved by expediting decisions related to specifications and testing."
