FirstHealth to switch to Epic EHR, drop McKesson

FirstHealth of the Carolinas, based in Pinehurst, N.C., plans to transition to Epic's EHR over the next two years, according to a report by The Pilot.

The system currently uses McKesson's EHR platform, but decided to switch to create a single record for patients of their entire medical history, according to the report.

FirstHealth went through a nine-month vetting process, evaluating proposals, demonstrations and presentations and soliciting feedback from employees.

The health system is still finalizing legal agreements with Epic, but the board of directors approved plans to move forward, according to the report.

Those plans include hiring approximately 40 full-time employees and 40 temporary contractors to help with the implementation.

"Investing in cutting-edge technologies is an important aspect of our commitment to the communities we serve and our mission to care for people," said David Kilarski, FirstHealth CEO. "We believe we will create a foundation on which we can transform the provision of healthcare within our region."
