A system that allows physicians to manage Bluetooth-enabled pacemaker devices using an app on an Apple iPad has been approved by the FDA, medical technology maker Medtronic announced on May 2.
The CareLink SmartSync Device Manager links a signal-transmitting base station and patient connector to an iPad app, through which physicians will be able to program Medtronic's implanted cardiac devices and monitor the devices' data. Earlier this year, the company launched MyCareLink Heart, which allows patients to monitor their own pacemakers through a smartphone app.
Medtronic, which has faced security issues in the past, equipped the SmartSync system with high-level security controls. The system and all connected devices feature "multi-encryption, run time application monitoring for intrusion detection, and access restrictions designed to protect the device and data transmissions."
