The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has issued an alert identifying a potential software security vulnerability with computerized infusion pumps.
The Hospira LifeCare PCA3 and PCA5 Infusion Pump Systems delivers anesthetic or therapeutic drugs and can be programmed remotely using a healthcare facility's wireless network. However, certain vulnerabilities have been discovered that could potentially allow an unauthorized user to interfere with the functioning of the pump and manipulate it to modify the dosage it delivers, according to the FDA alert.
As of yet, the FDA is not aware of any adverse events or access to the devices by unauthorized users related to this vulnerability.
