The Federal Bureau of Investigation has issued a warning to healthcare organizations that it has detected hackers and other malicious actors targeting healthcare systems, according to a Reuters report.
"The FBI has observed malicious actors targeting healthcare related systems, perhaps for the purpose of obtaining protected healthcare information and/or personally identifiable information," according to the FBI alert reported by Reuters. Intellectual property, such as development plans for medical devices or equipment, is also a possible target, according to the report.
The alert comes just a few days after Franklin, Tenn.-based Community Health Systems reported a cyberattack affecting nearly 4.5 million people.
This is not the first time the FBI has issued an alert to the healthcare industry about cyberattacks. In April, the FBI warned healthcare providers many of their cybersecurity systems lagged behind systems used in other industries, making the healthcare industry more vulnerable to hackers.
