A DNA testing system based on genomic analysis has been approved by the FBI for use in forensic laboratories contributing profiles to the National DNA Index System, San Diego-based biotech company Verogen announced on May 2.
The MiSeq FGx Forensic Genomics System comprises a test prep kit, a sequencing platform and analysis software, all of which allows forensic scientists to analyze up to 231 genomic DNA markers at once. The system can thus develop a more detailed forensic profile than other DNA testing methods, even if the evidence samples used are degraded, mixed or limited.
Verogen's system is the first of its kind to be approved by the FBI. The approval will give forensic labs around the country access to federal funding from the National Institute of Justice for the adoption and implementation of the "Next Generation Sequencing" technology.
