Owensboro (Ky.) Health is notifying patients of a potential data breach after the FBI noticed suspicious activity on the health system's network involving third parties at recently acquired Muhlenberg Community Hospital in Greenville, Ky.
On Sept. 16, the FBI notified Owensboro Health of the suspicious activity, and a forensic IT investigation revealed cyberattackers used a keystroke logger to capture and transmit patient data as it was entered into certain computers.
Potentially compromised information includes patient names, addresses, telephone numbers, birth dates, Social Security numbers, driver's license numbers, medical and health plan information, financial information, payment card information and information about people responsible for paying patients' bills.
The affected computers were used at Muhlenberg Community Hospital, which Owensboro Health acquired July 1.
Currently, Owensboro Health has no indication any data has been inappropriately used.
