Aurora Sheboygan Memorial Medical Center in Sheboygan, Wis., has introduced a new option in its neonatal intensive care unit aimed at helping parents unable to visit connect with their newborns through video-conference technology, according to a report from The Sheboygan Press.
Here are three things to know about the option.
1. The idea initially came from Staci Krahn, a registered nurse in the NICU. "I wanted a way for parents to be able to see their babies when they are not here," Ms. Krahn told The Sheboygan Press. "Some of them have other children at home or other commitments and cannot always be here."
2. The hospital began by connecting mothers with their babies with a Polaroid camera, according to the report, but has now introduced the option for parents to video conference with their newborns.
3. Families have the option of using FaceTime, Google Hangouts or Skype. Parents can also allow two other people to video-conference in, according to the report.
