Epic Systems has announced it will begin remote hosting — or cloud — services starting in 2015, getting closer to offering "software as a service," according to a report from Venture Beat.
The service will host institutions' Epic software and patient records. Initially targeted at medical groups and small hospitals, the service will be offered to new customers first and will later be extended to existing customers. To offer the service, Epic is currently constructing a new data center near its flagship in Verona, Wis., according to the report.
Full system hosting won't be available to large hospitals right away, but Epic may choose to offer patient record backup copy storage to such institutions, according to the report.
