Epic and Surescripts have collaborated to integrate medication prior authorization into the EHR platform.
Surescripts' CompletEPA for medication prior authorization will be available for Epic users. The software conducts the prior authorization process electronically in real-time, and when connected to an EHR, it allows for immediate information exchange between providers and pharmacy benefit managers.
The companies suggest such a tool will allow for a more accurate and efficient prescribing process. "Moving the prior authorization workflow into the EHR can save time for both physicians and payers," said Sumit Rana, Epic's CTO. "It's also good for patients when medications are approved faster and they receive their prescriptions sooner."
