An electronic health record alert that reminded physicians to administer pediatric flu vaccinations increased the odds of children receiving the vaccine, according to a study sponsored by Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality.
Researchers examined data collected from four community clinics in New York. Each of the clinics had integrated the flu vaccination alert — FluAlert — into their EHRs.
Researchers found that of the 1,949 alerts generated, 1,048 were alerts that indicated that a child needed the flu vaccine. Of those 1,048 instances, physicians acted on the alert 63 percent of the time, of which 29 percent of time, they ordered the vaccine. Thirty-four percent of them declined the alert.
