The EHR system a hospital uses varies strongly by the number of beds.
A report from research firm peer60 of 950 hospital executives found that smaller hospitals are more likely to use an EHR like eClinicalworks, while larger hospitals use systems such as Epic or Cerner.
Among small hospitals, which are classified as having less than 100 beds, the market is split with 20 percent using eClinicalWorks and another 20 percent using CPSI, followed by 12 percent using MEDITECH. Epic and Cerner own the market share of hospitals with more than 1,000 beds, with 30 percent each.
Every classification of hospital in the report seems to have its own preference, however. Approximately 40 percent of hospitals with between 100 and 250 beds use MEDITECH software with 20 percent using Cerner; 27 percent of hospitals with between 251 and 500 beds use a McKesson EHR and 19 percent use Cerner. Approximately 25 percent of hospitals with between 501 and 1,000 beds use a Siemens system, with 17 percent on Epic and another 17 percent on Cerner.
Much of this divide is likely to do with cost, the report said. However, the market is not settled, and the year will likely see each EHR vendor make a foray into different sections of the market, the report concluded.
