Tech workers undoubtedly consider a whole host of factors when evaluating a potential job opening, but among these, the most important include location, compensation and the rigor of the work.
According to Hired's "2019 Global Brand Health Report," commute length plays a major role in tech workers' decision-making process. Nearly one-third of the more than 3,600 surveyed said they would not even consider taking a job with a commute longer than 30 minutes; only 10 percent would consider a commute that clocked in over an hour. The majority were especially attracted to the idea of having no commute at all: Sixty-five percent expressed interest in working remotely full-time.
Salary, of course, is also top of mind for job seekers in the tech sector. More than half of those surveyed cited compensation as the most important thing they look for in a potential new role, while another 26 percent said other benefits, such as healthcare, equity and perks, are their biggest consideration. Additionally, when polled about reasons to switch jobs, a full 75 percent pointed to higher base salaries.
Finally, many respondents listed challenging work as a must-have in a new job. Nearly 60 percent listed the promise of new challenges and problems as a reason to switch jobs — second on the list — and about 40 percent said the opportunity to learn new skills is the most important thing they look for in a company.
