Dr. Farzad Mostashari: "I Will be by Your Side … Cheering You On"

farzardFarzad Mostashari, MD, announced his resignation Tuesday as the National Coordinator for Health IT, a position he has held for the past two years.

In an email to staff informing them of his departure, he described how his mother's healthcare struggles showed him the importance of electronic medical records, and fueled his decision to join HHS.

He wrote his mother's story now has a happy ending, thanks to the work of the ONC, according to Politico: "My mom has recovered now. Her hospital is working to implement new systems to provide accountable care. Her prescriptions and health records are electronic and can be shared across the state."

Dr. Mostashari, in citing the many accomplishments of the ONC staff during his tenure, celebrated progress made: "We have been pioneers in a new landscape, but that landscape is one changed forever, and for better," according to The Washington Post. He wrote this progress provides hope that major accomplishments are still possible in America, and that "we can still do big things as a country."

Dr. Mostashari gave no reason for his resignation, nor has his successor been named. However, the email highlighted Dr. Mostashari's continuing commitment to the ONC and the adoption of health IT across the country: "I don't know what I will be doing after I leave public service, but be assured that I will be by your side as we continue to battle for healthcare transformation, cheering you on," he wrote, according to Politico.
