David Blumenthal, MD, national coordinator for health IT, said small and rural healthcare providers should address data portability while shopping for potential electronic health record systems, according to a news report by the Kansas Health Institute.
Data portability allows healthcare providers to store, retrieve and share important clinical data through web-based databases or "clouds," similar to how Google Docs operates, Dr. Blumenthal explained at the Association of Health Care Journalists national conference.
This capability allows providers to more easily switch between EHR vendors, if need be, and only requires a low upfront investment since cloud-based systems operate virtually. The Office of the National Coordinator has yet to incorporate regulations on data portability, but Dr. Blumenthal predicts future stages of meaningful use may implement such criteria.
