Data systems in the healthcare industry will be more effective and useful if they are geared toward data consumption rather than data creation, according to an M*Modal report written by Jonathan Handler, MD, CMIO of the Franklin, Tenn.-based healthcare dictation and communication specialists.
Dr. Handler compared health IT data to the differences in the iPad and Microsoft tablets, saying while Microsoft created its less-successful tablets around creating content such as documents and presentations, the iPad was geared toward entertainment and consumption.
Comparatively, the electronic health record, as it stands now, is still too focused on data entry, Dr. Handler said, adding that the EHR does not offer a user-friendly approach to analyzing that data.
"Today, we think doctors resist using EHRs because they fear change, so our government is literally paying providers to start using EHRs," Dr. Handler said. "By supplementing the EHR with new technologies that facilitate content consumption, we'll get happier doctors and healthier patients."
