Telemedicine provider Doctor On Demand has expanded its mental health care services to include psychiatric video visits.
In December 2014, the provider added psychologists to its provider network.
"Many Americans don't have access to mental health treatment, and for those that do, long wait times, distance, cost and stigma are still barriers to getting care," said Donovan Wong, MD, medical director of mental health at Doctor On Demand. "By adding psychiatrists to our network, Doctor On Demand is making it easier for millions of Americans to get mental health care from the comfort of home."
Adam Jackson, co-founder and CEO of Doctor On Demand, said adding psychiatrists to the provider network also will help boost access to care for many patients. "Too many people don't know where to turn for mental health care, so they get overpriced care, the wrong care or no care at all," he says. "For employers, this problem is a major driver of healthcare costs."
The psychiatry services will first be available in 27 states and will extend nationwide by the middle of the year.
