'Disruptive Women in Health Care' community joins HIMSS Women in Health IT initiative

The Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society will fold the online platform Disruptive Women in Health Care into its Women in Health IT initiative, HIMSS announced Oct. 24.

Disruptive Women in Health Care, which launched in 2009, aims to "serve as a platform for provocative ideas, thoughts and solutions in the health sphere," according to its website. Throughout the year, the community hosts forums, book discussions and receptions on health policy topics.

"I'm delighted to announce that the highly-respected [HIMSS] is acquiring the rights to Disruptive Women," Robin Strongin, the community's founder, wrote in an Oct. 25 blog post. "With their commitment, reach and impressive infrastructure, I am excited to see how they will take our work to the next level."

Disruptive Women in Health Care will merge with the Women in Health IT initiative at HIMSS, which was founded in February 2016. Through the Women in Health IT initiative, HIMSS' goal is to build a diverse and equitable health IT workforce through education and networking opportunities.

Carla Smith, executive vice president of HIMSS, said the combined effort with Disruptive Women in Health Care will enable HIMSS to be "better positioned to equip professionals with education, mentoring, community and leadership they need to make smart career and hiring decisions."
