DHS CIO: Homeland Security names acting CIO

The Department of Homeland Security has named Stephen Rice acting CIO after Richard Staropoli abruptly resigned last week, the agency confirmed to FCW Aug. 7.

Mr. Rice has been the deputy CIO of Homeland Security since June, according to his LinkedIn profile. He will take over as acting CIO on Sept. 1, the department told FCW in an emailed statement.

In a separate statement, the agency confirmed Mr. Staropoli will voluntarily leave the department Sept. 1. The Homeland Security did not address why Mr. Staropoli — who held the CIO position for just three months — resigned.

Mr. Staropoli was appointed to the CIO role by President Donald Trump May 1, according to the Homeland Security website.
