Despite Threats and Challenges, Government Spending on Health IT Unlikely to Go Away

Even though Republicans are pushing for legislation to halt government spending initiatives, such as incentive payments for meaningful use of electronic health records, many health policy analysts say the proposed legislation probably wouldn't pass, according to a New York Times news report.

Apart from some Republican resistance, there are other challenges indicating a long journey for meaningful use. Most success stories have come out of large hospitals and health systems, and many physician practices and small hospitals lack the capital and human resources to keep up with the adoption rates of these larger organizations, according to the report.

Physicians are also skeptical about the efficiency and effectiveness of EHRs, saying adoption could hinder quality care by cutting into productivity. Still, nonprofit organizations and governmental agencies are working to smooth out the wrinkles by studying EHRs, its impact on patient safety and best practices for interoperability.
