In the past year, 61 percent of global healthcare organizations have experienced some form of security-related incident, according to a report from MeriTalk, underwritten by EMC Corp.
Here are key findings from three of the most common security-related incidents.
Security breaches
• 19 percent of global healthcare organizations have experienced a security breach in the past year.
• Each security breach incident cost an average of $810,189.
• Malware and viruses account for 58 percent of security breaches, followed by loss or theft (38 percent) and user error (35 percent).
Data loss
• 28 percent of global healthcare organizations reported experiencing a data loss in the past year.
• Each data loss incident cost an average of $807,571.
• Hardware failure is the most common cause of data loss, at 51 percent, followed by power loss (49 percent) and backup power loss (27 percent).
Unplanned outages
• In the past year, 40 percent of global healthcare organizations experienced an unplanned outage.
• Each unplanned outage incident cost an average of $432,000.
• Healthcare organizations report losing an average of 57 hours due to unplanned downtown in the past year.
• Hardware failure accounts for the most common cause of outages (65 percent), followed by loss of power (49 percent), software failure (31 percent) and data corruption (24 percent).
