MidState Medical Center in Meriden, Conn., announced an employee of Hartford Hospital has been dismissed following an investigation into the employee's improper transfer of 93,500 MidState patients' information to a personal hard drive, according to a Hartford Courant news report.
Both MidState Medical Center and Hartford Hospital are partners under Hartford HealthCare. The former Hartford Hospital employee's hard drive contained patients' names, addresses, birth dates, Social Security numbers and medical record numbers. No information on patient diagnosis or treatment is on the hard drive, hospital officials said. According to the news report, the former employee wanted to work from home.
The missing hard drive is still missing, but hospital officials said there is no reason to believe any patients' personal information has been inappropriately used. The hospital will be sending letters to all affected patients and is offering two years of identity protection service.
