Columbia University biomedical informatics professor to serve as JAMIA editor-in-chief

The American Medical Informatics Association named Suzanne Bakken, RN, PhD, editor-in-chief of its peer-reviewed journal, Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association, effective Jan. 1, 2019.

Dr. Bakken is the alumni professor of nursing and professor of biomedical informatics at New York City-based Columbia University. She also directs the Precision in Symptom Self-Management Center as well as co-chairs the Health Analytics Center of the Data Science Institute at Columbia University.

Dr. Bakken has been a member of AMIA since 1991. She served as a member of its board of directors as well as the chair of the AMIA 2000 Annual Symposium Scientific Program Committee. She is also a fellow and immediate past president of the American College of Medical Informatics.

Dr. Bakken has authored 300-plus scientific papers and served as principal investigator for numerous research studies, receiving support from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, National Institute of Mental Health and National Institute of Nursing Research, among others.

In her new role, Dr. Bakken succeeds Lucila Ohno-Machado, MD, PhD, who served as the journal's editor-in-chief for eight years.
