Coalition Urges Congress to Incentivize Remote Patient Monitoring

In a letter to Congressional representatives, a coalition of health IT stakeholders advocate for electronic health record incentives that foster the use and expansion of remote patient monitoring technologies.

The coalition, made up of the American Telemedicine Association, the Association for Competitive Technology, Continua Health Alliance and the Telecommunications Industry Association, assert remote patient monitoring improves care delivery and increases patient satisfaction. They also argue remote patient monitoring saves money, citing a recent Juniper Research report that found the technology will save an estimated $27 billion by 2018 in North America.

The letter asks Congress to help foster the use of remote patient monitoring technology by designing EHR incentives that require the use of EHR systems that both meet industry standards for interoperability with remote monitoring devices and establish target goals for the use of remote patient monitoring for patients with one of more high-priority conditions.
