CMS' Office of E-Health Standards and Services has announced that between 5 percent and 10 percent of eligible professionals attesting for meaningful use will be selected to undergo an audit before they receive incentive payments, according to an AAFP News Now report.
Physicians selected for the audit, known as a "prepayment audit," will receive a letter. Elizabeth Holland, director of the Health IT Initiative Group (a department overseen by the e-health standards office), told AAFP News Now that selections will be made both randomly and based on protocols that identify suspicious attestation data.
Another round of "postpayment audits" will affect another 5 percent to 10 percent of healthcare professionals, according to the report.
