CMS Launches Innovation Center for Testing Tools to Improve Healthcare Delivery

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services has established the new Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation (Innovation Center), created by the Affordable Care Act to examine new tools to improve healthcare delivery and payment to healthcare providers, according to a CMS news release.

CMS has also announced an opportunity for states to apply for contracts to develop demonstration models aimed at improving healthcare quality, care coordination and cost-effectiveness. It will also work with stakeholders to create learning communities that help other providers rapidly implement these new care models.

Among some of its initiatives, the Innovation Center will establish an "open innovation community" that serves as an information clearinghouse of best practices in healthcare innovation. Three demonstration projects have already launched to find best practices for the medical home care model and its impact on access, quality and healthcare cost.
