CMS Launches First Phase of Physician Compare Website

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services has improved its Physician Directory tool through the launching of the first phase of its Physician Compare website, which will provide consumers with information about physicians, according to a Healthcare IT News report.

The Physician Compare website will take after CMS' existing Hospital Compare website, which allows viewers to research and compare hospitals against price and quality factors. CMS will be using its Physician Directory tool as a base for the website.

Through the Physician Compare website, various data about Medicare physicians will be made available to the public, including contact information and addresses of physicians' offices, physicians' medical specialties, gender, foreign languages they can speak as well as where physicians' received his or her training. Data on quality measures reported to CMS by physicians through the Physician Quality Reporting System, formerly known as Physician Quality Reporting Initiative, will also be included on the website.

In a second phase of the website, the Physician Compare website will indicate which physicians work collaboratively with CMS to encourage other physicians to prescribe medication electronically. Other future plans include making more information available about the quality of care received by Medicare patients and patients' experiences.
