CMS has issued guidance for certain physicians who provide services in the outpatient departments of critical access hospitals about how they can participate in the Medicare Electronic Health Record Incentive Program beginning this year, according to an AHA News Now report.
The guidance is applicable for physicians employed with critical access hospitals that bill Medicare for their outpatient department services using optional Method II. Under this method, the hospital bills Medicare on behalf of the physician for services covered under the Medicare Physician Fee Schedule.
CMS had excluded these physicians from the incentive programs due to system constraints. Concerns raised by the American Hospital Association and other organizations prompted CMS to implement system changes to include these physicians, according to the report.
