As of the end of October, CMS has paid out almost $17 billion in meaningful use incentives to hospitals and eligible providers since the program's inception.
Of the total outlay, about $10.3 billion has gone to eligible hospitals. The largest payments were made in 2012, when hospitals earned $5.5 billion. So far in 2013, CMS has paid out $1.6 billion to hospitals.
Since 2011, 4,246 hospitals have received meaningful use incentive payments. In October, 73 hospitals attested to meaningful use, the largest single-month rate this year.
