In just 18 months as vice president and CIO of Hackensack (N.J.) University Medical Center, Shafiq Rab, MD, has led the hospital through a series of innovative IT adoptions and implementations.
Under Dr. Rab's leadership, HackensackUMC moved from the HIMSS EMR Adoption Model Stage 4 to Stage 6 in one and a half years, and is on the way to achieving Stage 7. He also has enhanced mobile technology for physicians, standardized the hospital on a single EMR system and achieved meaningful use stage 1.
Prior to joining HackensackUMC, Dr. Rab was vice president and CIO of Middletown, N.Y.-based Greater Hudson Valley Health System, where he also led the organization to achieve HIMSS Stage 7 and meaningful use stage 1, becoming the first CIO to do so in two consecutive organizations.
Dr. Rab has also served as vice president and CIO of Catskill Regional Medical Center in Harris, N.Y., and St. Mary's Hospital in Passaic, N.J. Additionally, he was CIO, director of IT and information security officer at Carrier Clinic, East Mountain Hospital in Belle Mead, N.J.
