In May 2011, Alan Smith was appointed vice president and CIO of Franklin, Tenn.-based Capella Healthcare, a 13-hospital system, seven-state system.
Mr. Smith was awarded Capella's Shining Star Award in 2013, recognizing him for outstanding work across the system's five pillars: quality, service, people, growth and finance.
Though he joined Capella in 2011, Mr. Smith's health IT experience spans 20 years prior and includes positions in a variety of healthcare arenas, including hospitals, hospital management companies, healthcare insurance and technology consulting firms.
Mr. Smith previously was vice president of applications and interim CIO for Nashville, Tenn.-based Vanguard Health System, a client results executive for Kansas City, Mo.-based Cerner, vice president of clinical applications for Charlotte, N.C.-based Carolinas Healthcare System and a technology consultant for Andersen Consulting and First Consulting Group in Detroit, now known as Accenture.
Mr. Smith is also a board member of Tennessee HIMSS.
