ChristianaCare forms health IT partnership with Medtronic

Wilmington, Del.-based ChristianaCare and Medtronic have partnered to develop and deploy medical technologies and therapies to improve patient outcomes, the organizations announced Dec. 16.

The five-year partnership was founded upon ChristianaCare and Medtronic's shared goal of transitioning from fee-for-service to value-based healthcare, Medtronic CEO Omar Ishrak, PhD, said in the announcement.

One of the partnership's first projects will address opioid-induced ventilatory impairment, in which opioids taken for pain management inhibit a patient's ability to breathe, by applying enhanced respiratory monitoring technology. Other initiatives will address heart failure and diabetes, all with goals of preventing or slowing disease progression, reducing hospitalizations and decreasing the cost of care.

"Together with Medtronic, we are aligning expertise and incentives to exponentially increase our ability to achieve optimal health — not just better care delivery. ... This collaboration will implement a new value chain, based on vested purpose, co-innovation, digital and data," said Randall Gaboriault, ChristianaCare's chief digital and information officer and senior vice president of innovation and strategic development.
