CHIME has selected Shafiq Rab, MD, vice president and CIO of HackensackUMC in New Jersey as the recipient of its Innovator of the Year Award, and named Rodney Dykehouse, CIO of the Penn State Hershey (Penn.) Medical Center the recipient of its Federal Public Policy Award for CIO Leadership.
As CIO of HackensackUMC, Dr. Rab was integral in advancing the system's interoperability capabilities by linking patient fitness devices and mobile health apps with its EHR, enabling its physicians to work with a more complete dataset of overall health and medical history. HackensackUMC also partnered with the Argonaut Project to adopt FHIR, HL7's standards framework for improved information exchange.
"Achieving interoperability is one of the industry's biggest challenges and priorities," Russell Branzell, president and CEO of CHIME, said in a statement. "Through Shafiq's efforts, we are seeing how greater connectivity between providers and patients can create more efficient and effective care delivery."
The Federal Public Policy Award for CIO Leadership recognizes a member of CHIME for their work in educating policymakers on the value of health IT and providing feedback on federal health IT initiatives. Mr. Dykehouse, a member of CHIME's Policy Steering Committee, was recognized for his leadership in issues such as cybersecurity and meaningful use.
Ann Arbor – CHIME has named Rodney Dykehouse as the recipient of the organization's Federal Public Policy Award for CIO Leadership. Dykehouse is CIO of Penn State Hershey Medical Center and College of Medicine.
Mr. Dykehouse serves as a member of CHIME's Policy Steering Committee and has been a leader on critical issues such as cybersecurity and the meaningful use program.
"Having worked at different types of organizations across the country, Rod brings a unique perspective to policy discussions," Randy McCleese, chair of CHIME's Policy Steering Committee and vice president of information services and CIO of St. Claire Regional Medical Center in Morehead, Ky., said in a statement. "His background has added significantly to the Policy Steering Committee and CHIME's efforts in Washington, D.C."
