Children's Hospital Los Angeles partners with HIMSS to tackle social determinants of health in Latino population

Children's Hospital Los Angeles and the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society have teamed up to combat health inequities among Latino youth.

An estimated 62 percent of Latino youth live in low-income families and are at a greater risk for health problems, according to HIMSS.

In an attempt to address these inequities, Children's Hospital LA and HIMSS will launch a global technology challenge that invites developers to design solutions to improve the health of Latino youth by tackling three key areas: mental well-being, access to healthcare and access to social services.

Applications for the challenge will open March 4 and close April 26. Three winners will receive funding prizes of more than $20,000 to bring their ideas to fruition.

In January, Children's Hospital LA and HIMSS held their inaugural Tech for Latinx Health Equity summit. The event focused on educating healthcare leaders about common health issues Latino children face, with an emphasis on how the immigration process can affect a child's health. For example, the summit touched on the trauma children may experience during the immigration process and how fear may deter families from seeking healthcare or social services.
