CHI filed a federal lawsuit against an unknown hacker to allow the government to submit a request to Microsoft to get information on email accounts used by the hacker to potentially access patient information, according to the report.
The lawsuit alleges the hacker was able to view emails containing patient information by re-directing emails intended for physicians' inboxes to the hacker's email accounts. The lawsuit also alleges the hacker was able to gain control of CHI's website, according to the report.
This is the second data breach to affect CHI and Franciscan Medical Group in the past five months. In January, Franciscan Medical Group notified patients their personal and health information had been compromised due to a phishing scam.
