Cerner opens database to local hospitals

Kansas City, Mo.-based Cerner has joined forces with two local hospitals to use the vendor's big data to help them improve care.

According to a Kansas City Business Journal report, University of Missouri-Kansas City and Kansas City, Mo.-based Truman Medical Centers will compare observations on patients to Cerner's Health Facts database to see if patterns apply to larger patient populations.

Cerner's database hosts information on millions of patients. Any patient-identifying data has been removed.

"The centerpiece of this partnership provides tools to accelerate clinical and translational research and ultimately provide better health outcomes," said Lawrence Dreyfus, UMKC's vice chancellor for research and economic development in a hospital news release. "We couldn't be more excited about the prospects that this partnership holds for healthcare decisions that ultimately improve care and reduce costs.
